Tax season is already about halfway over. This year’s tax day is April 18. If you’re one of the 40 million Americans who have traded cryptocurrency in 2021, you might have some questions about your tax return. Here’s a quick rundown on the two main ways cryptocurrency is taxed:
The IRS treats cryptocurrency like property so any money that you make on your crypto is taxed as either income or capital gains.
If you sold or traded cryptocurrency, you will need to report a capital gain or loss, e.g. if you bought a bitcoin for $20,000 and sold it for $50,000, the $30,000 you made counts as a capital gain.
The same tax principles apply to NFTs. If you purchased an NFT with ETH, then you technically sold your ETH and will need to report a gain or loss.
When you sold your cryptocurrency also matters. If you own your cryptocurrency for more than a year, it’s a long-term gain. Long-term gain rates are typically lower than short-term gain rates, which are taxed at the same rates as your ordinary income.
If you received cryptocurrency as income e.g. mining, certain staking rewards — it will be taxed as ordinary income based on your tax bracket. So if your income bracket is 20%, the same rate will apply to your cryptocurrency earnings.
